One of my headcanon is that Reks was a (aspired) musician, and he was actually quite close to Tomaj. There used to be a piano in the Sandsea, filling the tavern with melodies (and Reks could earn a few Gils from the customers). But when he passed away, Tomaj stored the piano somewhere, no ready for anyone else to play on it just yet.

i don’t think about reks that much bc it makes me very sad but there’s a lot of potential for some beautifully fleshed out headcanons for him.
