This is something that can hardly be shown through screenshots, especially from someone who runs the game on a capricious pc but part of what makes Final Fantasy XII such a rich compelling gaming experience is the amount of care that went into facial expressions. There are constant slight movements, nuanced changes in the character’s faces, regardless of whether they’re on the foreground or standing behind everyone else, that set the entire mood of a scene and speak volumes on the characters’ psyche, motives and emotional state. The game might be from 2006, it managed to convey body language in a unique way and I have yet to encounter a game that beats it in this regard. The storyboarding is incredible and I can’t allow myself to look away from my screen for a split second because I feel like I could miss a faint smile, a quick twitch, eyes lowering or lips ever so slightly pursing.

And this is only improved on by a stellar voice acting. I know, I know. Sometimes it does sound like it’s been recorded in your late uncle’s garage but once you accept that’s part of the game’s charm, you can move on to appreciate how emotional the actors’ performances are. It was no surprise to me to find out talented theatre actors among the cast and I think this decision is a refreshing change from many games where you encounter the same big names over and over.

In the previous post I’ve analyzed how they are separated, in quite an official way. And one minute later everything changes. They are one family, wishing for a peaceful world. Basch will always behind her tho. That won’t change.

It’s interesting to (over) analyze their position. Ashe of course is one step ahead of everyone. She is the leader here. Al-cid’s political peer. Vaan and Penelo are behind her, the people of Dalmasca supporting her.

Basch is in the middle, always one step behind Ashe. Ashe is the leader but Basch is her advisor. He should strive to be unbiased. Even if he is a Dalmascan at heart, he comes from the Republic of Landis, he is alone in the middle because he’s not from Rabanastre.

And then, as usual, the two stateless pirates Balthier and Fran stay two steps away from the main discussion. But this time they’re not in the far back where they usually stay. They are on the same line as the others. They are involved.
