Sometimes I think about video games too hard… In FFXII Ashe’s marriage was arranged for political reasons, but was she able to say no? I mean how much choice did she have in the matter? If she said “no” would there be any consequences, or would everyone around guilt her about “not doing her duty to her country” and pressure her into consenting. She did love her husband and they were happy and whatnot, but they didn’t decide to marry on their own volition. I wonder if either of them resented their parents for taking that choice away, or if they just accepted it as a fact of life. Even if you want something it still sucks to be unable to say “no.”
I agree with you. I’m sure they were not ready to marry and they didn’t have a choice.
Rasler was likely to be more prepared. Nabradia was on the front line between Rozarria and Archades. They asked Rozarria to move their troops at Nabradia’s borders (or so it was written in the bestiary). Rasler certainly anticipated the official proposal. Al-cid could have sisters, but it is implied that Al-cid is not the heir, so his potential sisters’ position is not the best marriage material. Ashe is. Rasler knew it was the best option to marry the daughter of King Raminas.
Ashe, I think, was not naive. She knew she would marry a prince someday. But she wouldn’t know which one (she’s the only girl in all this political scene) and not that soon. Luckily she fell in love with Rasler, but their live together was too short.

Dalmasca Estersand is one of my favourite videogame starting areas – I especially love the colour palette

Continuing with my FFXII Eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern redesigns It’s finally Penelo’s turn. I took inspiration from all her outfits and pulled colors from each one to make a single color scheme. The pants are basically lifted straight from her Revenant Wings outfit, right down to the embroidery on the hem. The motifs on her vest are taken from her original outfit. I kept the overall design simple, because her canon designs are rather simple especially in contrast to Ashe’s. And yes, she does have a feather tucked in her sash.
Once again the colors are off because my tablet display and regular monitor are calibrated differently. And you can see why I avoid drawing shoes at all costs. They’re supposed to look like her shoes from Tactics A2 but rounder, but they ended up looking like Vivienne Westwood’s rocking horse shoes.

Final version of my Eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern inspired redesign for Ashe. I feel like there’s a massive disconnect between the Dalmasca’s real world inspiration and what the characters wear and it detracts from the otherwise decent world building. You run around Rabanstre in the HD version and you can see all these little tiny details all around the city that are hallmarks of Middle Eastern design so it’s clear they put all this work into building the right aesthetic and atmosphere, but then you see how the main characters are dressed and it’s a bit of a let down. I also felt that Ashe’s outfit didn’t really match her personality and role in the story. She’s the type of person that’s would always be impeccably dressed in elegant and timeless yet fashionable clothes. When she’s hiding she’s probably dress more practically and simple to blend in, her regular outfit is too garish for someone who’s supposed to be in hiding and not bringing attention to themselves.
She’s got some chainmaille layered in her clothes, so that she has some sort of practical armor that covers her torso. Since I ditched the greaves, I went for a similar design with the gold embroidery on her pants. Originally I was going to do a bit more with her top, but decided against it because it felt like it would be too much and the design would be unbalanced. I wasn’t sure what to do with that necklace/brooch thing she has in her original design, so I made it into a plain necklace. The gold bangles are taken straight from her other outfits. And the motifs for the embroidery and stuff are taken straight from shutterstock, though maybe one day I’ll use designs that she actually has on her various outfits. It’s just I’d have to draw them from scratch using references and that takes too much time.
I’m pretty happy with how this turned out because it’s been ages since I drew something. I just wish I could figure out a way to make my lines less shaky, though having a display tablet does help a bit.
And look at the fullview please, because the textures got eaten by tumblr’s compression.
Gonna do Penelo next.
