I headcanon The Breakfast Song from Ghibli’s From Up on Poppy Hill as one of the small songs composed by Reks and Penelo.

On a nice morning of spring, Tomaj is cooking, while Vaan set the table. Reks plays and Penelo sings.

What is your favorite Reks headcanon story?

It’s actually the one I spoke a bit about to @skystones the first time I wrote to her. Let me elaborate.

Reks aspires to be a musician and he is quite gifted. He plays the piano and the violin. It is actually rare for a commoner to play such instruments because they are expensive. Most people play simpler street instruments like flute or percussions. But I imagine Reks and Vaan’s mum as a music professor with most clients in the upper district of Rabanastre.

When Reks and Vaan become orphans, they meet Tomaj, who welcome them and help them. Reks becomes Tomaj’s employee and best friend.

One day, Reks burst into the tavern, excited as hell, and he begs Tomaj to invest a little bit of money on an old piano. It costs a bit but it’s actually a good deal for a fancy instrument.
Reks convinces Tomaj because the piano will be a curiosity in the neighborhood and it should bring customers to the tavern.

And it’s working ! People are really coming just to listen to Reks’ music. Tomaj soon realises he is actually in love with Reks. His presence and the soft melodies soothe him and make him feel home.

Penelo loves to sing along the piano and the two of them create small songs together.

Reks is a dreamer, a soft-hearted boy. The only thing he needs in life is the smile of his brother and his new family.

Here is the sad part.

When Reks dies, Tomaj is inconsolable. He can’t bear the thought of someone else playing on this old piano. That’s why he decides to store it away. The heart of the tavern is gone.

I think about Reks so many time, I headcanon-ed stories for so long, I don’t even know what’s canon or not anymore.

Was he tortured ? Like, physically ? For a long time I didn’t quite understand what happened to him exactly. I didn’t understand why or what forced him to completely shut down his mind.

To become completely uncapable of/unwilling to move, speak or react anymore, he must have endured a hell of psychological or maybe physical torture and pressure.

He was just a boy

doctorcid:

sometimes i think about reks saying “captain…why?” as gabranth stabs him right in the gut and he falls to the floor, the life leaving him right after he witnessed the death of the king. something i think about how he was forcibly kept alive just enough to testify and i think about vaan getting flowers and visiting him in the hospital and then i think about how reks died marked as a traitor and kingslayer even though he was loyal to the last. something i think about reks and what he could have been if things had been different. i love my good son reks. i miss my good son reks. and if there was ever a character who deserved better? it’s reks.
