It’s actually the one I spoke a bit about to @skystones the first time I wrote to her. Let me elaborate.
Reks aspires to be a musician and he is quite gifted. He plays the piano and the violin. It is actually rare for a commoner to play such instruments because they are expensive. Most people play simpler street instruments like flute or percussions. But I imagine Reks and Vaan’s mum as a music professor with most clients in the upper district of Rabanastre.
When Reks and Vaan become orphans, they meet Tomaj, who welcome them and help them. Reks becomes Tomaj’s employee and best friend.
One day, Reks burst into the tavern, excited as hell, and he begs Tomaj to invest a little bit of money on an old piano. It costs a bit but it’s actually a good deal for a fancy instrument.
Reks convinces Tomaj because the piano will be a curiosity in the neighborhood and it should bring customers to the tavern. And it’s working ! People are really coming just to listen to Reks’ music. Tomaj soon realises he is actually in love with Reks. His presence and the soft melodies soothe him and make him feel home.
Penelo loves to sing along the piano and the two of them create small songs together.
Reks is a dreamer, a soft-hearted boy. The only thing he needs in life is the smile of his brother and his new family.
Here is the sad part.
When Reks dies, Tomaj is inconsolable. He can’t bear the thought of someone else playing on this old piano. That’s why he decides to store it away. The heart of the tavern is gone.
@doctorcid I’m gonna tag you in all my previous Reks’ headcanon posts =p
