@sky-paper Here a
little something from my headcanon slightly changed for your balvaan feelings :

Before the war, brand-new skypirate Balthier is in Rabanastre looking for pieces
of information about the Dusk shard and stops by the Seasand. The place is full
of chatting and laughers. The war may be pending but no one wants to think
about it just yet. A joyful melody rises from a corner, the atmosphere even
more cheerful than before thanks to a young pianist. Some customers compliment
this Reks guy, others gently complain how he can never stop playing his damn
piano all day. Balthier observes the scene in silence, guessing too well what
the Empire is planning to do with this small country. Soon, a simple melody from
a piano might not be enough to cheer people up.

It was a memory Balthier had forgotten long ago. Now he’s back in Rabanastre,
finally on the edge of getting his hands on the sacred stone. If it wasn’t for
this annoying amateur thief. Vaan keeps referring to his older brother, and how
the Empire is gonna pay one day for what has been done to Reks… Reks… Suddenly
the skypirate remembers why the name sounds familiar; it was the name of this
piano guy so full of live. Not that he ever talked to him, but Balthier
realizes how his prediction from years ago sadly became very true. Vaan may be
a reckless boy, but he has known pain and he was determined. Balthier could only
respect those feelings. He had no idea how long they were going to journey
together, he would certainly never mention this scene at the Seasand. But if he
had any role to play in all of this, then maybe, in the end, Vaan could lead a life
filled with melodies again. Only gods knew what destiny had planned for them.
